As one of the major multi-cultural cities in Europe, Berlin is home to a great number of art and culture, musical, traditional and commercial festivals and events. The carnival of cultures, for example, fuses the music and foods of all of Berlin's residents from African dancers to Thai curries and Turkish sweets to Caribbean reggae.

The enormous trade fair grounds (International Congress Centre, ICC) is home to a number of annual, international fairs, ranging from holidays to fashion to fruit and vegetables.

The streets of Berlin are also regular locations for street fairs and markets, celebrating cultures (Fête de la Musique), electronic music (Love Parade) and sexuality (Christopher Street Day). The following list offers a selection of the festivals and events in Berlin.

Berlin Festivals & Events

Berlin Film Festival (Berlinale): Probably Berlin's most important cultural event, this film festival is held annually in February and places an emphasis on representing films from all over the world. The awards are known as the Gold and Silver Bears (the Bear is the symbol of Berlin). The festival is held in a number of cinemas across the city.

Carnival of Cultures (Karnival der Kulturen): This carnival presents the cultural and ethnic diversity of Berlin with music, food and events on the streets of Kreuzberg. The carnival takes place over four days during the Pentecost weekend.

Fête de la Musique: Music festival with live bands and dancing groups all over the city celebrate the beginning of the summer. Over 400 bands are represented playing different styles of music.

Love Parade: Electronic dance music festival with house, trance and techno music. This festival and parade began in Berlin in 1989 and has now spread to other major cities throughout the world. Initially set up as a political demonstration for peace, the Love Parade is now a commercial event held every July.

Christopher Street Day: Like most big towns in Germany, Berlin celebrates Christopher Street Day every year between June and August. The festival is composed of floats and walking groups from lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender associations. The festival ends with a spectacular fireworks display.

Design in May (Designmai): International design festival held every year in Berlin. The latest designs from Germany and Europe are on display as well as over a hundred events, exhibitions, workshops and presentations.

Berlin Jazz Festival (JazzFest Berlin): Features globally renowned names from the world of jazz and blues. The festival take place every year in October or November.
