English Language Media in Berlin

A world of information, both local and global - in English. The local and international English-language print and broadcast media that is available to you if you live in Berlin.
Radio

BBC World Service can be received on digital FM 90.2 and Satellite Hot Bird 2-13º East.

The main BBC stations and other English-language radio can also be received via many satellite TV installations or over the Internet. Previously broadcast programmes can often be listened to again or downloaded.

Voice of America is also available on shortwave, with NewsNow

Radio in Berlin

  • Deutsche Welle (German equivalent to BBC World) also broadcasts in English
  • Rock Star FM 87.9 features news bulletins from America
  • Fritz FM 102.6 occasionally broadcasts programmes in English after 18:00
  • Jazz Radio FM 101.9 broadcasts programmes in English from 18:00-midnight

  • American Forces Network (AFN) broadcasts radio programmes in English to several parts of Germany. 

Radio on the Internet: English-language stations online

Many radio stations stream their broadcasts on the Internet. Typically you will need RealPlayer or Windows Media Player, both of which can be downloaded.

Television

Cable

Some English free-to-air channels can be received via cable including BBC World, BBC Prime, Sky News, Nickelodeon and CNN.

Satellite

In Germany, the Astra 2 satellite transmits English speaking channels such as BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky.

Other satellite options are Intelsat and Eutelsat.

Premiere is one of the biggest digital satellite providers in Germany offering programme packages or subscription to individual channels. Although it does not broadcast specifically in English, Premiere shows live games from the English premiership as well as many other European leagues on Saturday afternoons and other sports including Wimbledon, Formula 1 and major golf tournaments. It offers multiple-language commentary and multiple interactive screens for example to watch more than one match simultaneously.

Print Publications

Magazines

  • EXBERLINER is a monthly magazine in English available through subscription or from numerous outlets in and around Berlin. It is also available online. It contains classifieds, tourist information and Berlin cinema listings

Newspapers

Daily international newspapers and a wide range of magazines are available from many newsstands and newsagents throughout the city. English newspapers are available on the day of publication.

  • The Berlin Paper is an online newspaper with an up-to-date guide to what's on in Berlin and insider tips for life in Berlin
  • German News is a news site intended for Germans abroad to access current news. An English version is produced roughly one day after the German edition. Topics covered pertain mainly to Germany
