Transport

The Federal Republic of Germany has a regional road network of over 231,000 Km. Around 12,044 Km of that are Federal motorways. On Germany's motorways a kilometre-based user charge is levied only on heavy goods vehicles.

With its central location in Central Europe Germany is a hub for international air traffic. From Germany there are connections by air to all regions of the world. There are also good and sometimes cheap air links between the cities and regional airports in Germany.

The railways are the most environmental friendly form of motorised transport, way ahead of cars and planes. You will find an initial overview of the long-distance rail network of Deutscher Bahn AG (German Railways plc) and the regions' local networks under www.bahn.de. A complete overview of all the available forms of transport of a particular town/city or region is provided by the website www.nahmobil.com/suche-deutschland.htm.

Cheap offers from the railways and individual airline companies for long-distance journeys across Germany are to be had from EUR 30. However, such cheap offers are normally subject to time restrictions, for specific dates or available only if booked in advance. The standard price for a train ticket from Hamburg to Munich is currently EUR 115. A plane ticket for the same journey costs between EUR 100 and EUR 300.
